About "Music City Fly Girls"
Our first meeting was held on October 18th, and we had 15 women in attendance. What a great group! By the end of the meeting, we all knew that this would be a hit! Lots of laughs and good energy made the time fly and before we knew it, we had run an hour longer than expected.
We had a diverse group of women ranging from homemakers, nurses, veterinarians, engineers, song writers, psychologists, pilots, landscapers accountants, buyers, editors, graphic artists, whew.... what a crew.
During the meeting we agreed on a mission. We wanted a venue that would be something everyone looks forward to each month. Refreshments would be provided at each meeting with members volunteering to bring a covered dish and a bottle of "something" on a rotating basis. We all love to eat!
We also discussed having a variety of meetings covering basic casting, entomology, a discussion on gear, flies, places to fish in Tennessee and other places around the country. We are looking to have guest speakers, both for instruction and guided trip opportunities. Future events including a Christmas party, fund raisers for potential charities, and a group trip to Salt Lake City were discussed, and everyone was excited about the ideas.
We agreed to a dues structure of $60/year. The funds will go towards supplementing group outings. Guests are free on their first visit but will be asked to "pony up" after that.
We are expecting this to be an exciting time as we build our group and make plans for future meetings and outings. Come and join us and witness the energy first hand!

Casting For Recovery Volunteer Meeting
Take121 Arts
121 Third Avenue South
Casting for Recovery is a national non-profit support and educational program for women who have or have had breast cancer.
The program provides an opportunity for women whose lives have been profoundly affected by the disease to gather in a beautiful, natural setting and learn fly-fishing, "a sport for life." Just as importantly, we offer an opportunity to meet new friends and have fun.
The weekend retreats incorporate counseling, educational services and the sport of fly-fishing to promote mental and physical healing.
Founded in 1996, Casting for Recovery has been offering free retreats across the country, relying on local volunteers and organizations to support the community based retreats.
Music City Fly Girls is committed to this volunteer effort!
Why fly fishing and breast cancer?
To Fish is to Hope ©
The retreats provide an avenue for social support and group interactions, reducing the feeling of isolation many survivors might have.
The dynamics of fly fishing provide a healing connection to the natural world, relieving everyday stressors and promoting a sense of calm.
Fly fishing techniques provide a gentle exercise for joint and soft tissue mobility.
The retreats offer a forum for women with similar experiences to meet, learn a new skill and gain a respite from their everyday concerns.
The August 21st meeting will highlight past retreats, give information on becoming a volunteer and give details on the upcoming retreat planned for April 2009 at Tumbling Creek. Wanda Taylor (retreat leader) and Dick Davis (TU President) will host the discussion.
Music City Fly Girls will host a fund raiser to support CFR later in the year at the Take 121 Art Gallery.
We thought it would be fun to hold the August meeting at the Art Gallery so everyone can see this fabulous location.
See you all there!
